For Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week new Research in Practice resources aim to recognise harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people.

Harmful sexual behaviour includes activities expressed by children and young people that are developmentally inappropriate. Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week provides an opportunity for individuals and organisations to engage in dialogue.

Meeting the often complex needs of children displaying harmful sexual behaviour can be challenging for all parts of the workforce. In new videos, Pat Branigan and Emma Hodgson from NSPCC explore how we can recognise this behaviour and what we mean when we talk about it.

These resources aim to support social work practitioners to recognise harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people.

In this short video, Pat Branigan from the NSPCC examines how we can recognise harmful sexual behaviours that are displayed by children and young people. He looks at how we can get the balance right between risk and need and avoiding the labelling of children. The video also examines the disruption of the natural healthy sexual development of children or young people.

In this short video, Pat Branigan from NSPCC examines what we mean when we talk about harmful sexual behaviours displayed by children and young people. It elaborates upon the spectrum of behaviours that harmful sexual behaviour encompasses and how the spectrum can be used to respond to a range of harmful sexual behaviours in a manner that is both appropriate and proportionate.

Emma Hodgson from the NSPCC addresses technology assisted harmful sexual behaviours displayed by children and young people. Emma talks about why we need to avoid the minimisation of technology assisted harmful sexual behaviours when we talk about how it might move offline. She shares helpful case studies to demonstrate how this may be presented online and its impact on children and young people.

Resources to recognise harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people

These resources aim to support practitioners working with children and young people who are displaying harmful sexual behaviour.

This briefing outlines research findings and practice messages relating to two forms of domestic violence instigated by young people:

  • Interpersonal violence and abuse in adolescent relationships.

  • Adolescent to parent violence and abuse, including violence towards carers. It includes discussion of risk and protective factors, theoretical understandings, and evidence of help-seeking, safety planning and prevention, with onward links to a wide range of practice briefings and tools.
