Three open access resources aim to support defensible decision-making in children's social care organisations.
In partnership with the Practice Supervisor Development Programme (PSDP), Research in Practice has developed three linked publications to promote defensible decision-making within children’s social care organisations. The resources aim to support line managers to develop analytical writing skills; development leads to train staff; and leaders to host discussion on defensible decision-making in their children’s social care organisations. All are open access and designed to be used together.
Defensible decision-making in children’s social care - resource pack for practice supervisors: Frontline Briefing
This resource pack will be relevant to any member of staff who provides individual or group supervision and/or line manages social workers. It has been developed to support practice supervisors to:
- facilitate reflective and analytical discussions in supervision which inform defensible decision-making,
- review and develop skills in writing brief, analytical summaries that ensure that each child’s social care record demonstrates evidence of defensible decision-making and a coherent narrative about their involvement with the organisation,
- promote team-wide discussion and shared learning about analysis and defensible decision-making with practitioners.
Defensible decision-making in children’s social care - CPD Guide: Practice Guide
This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Guide has been written for any member of staff who has a responsibility for training and development within children’s social care organisations (for example, workforce development leads or Principal Social Workers).
It contains all the information needed to run three (3.5 hour) sessions for practice supervisors (using tools provided in the resource pack).
Defensible decision-making in children’s social care - challenge questions for leaders: Leaders' Briefing
This short publication provides an overview of key issues and challenge questions for middle and senior leaders to consider when planning how to support skill development in defensible decision-making within your organisation.
In order to gain maximum benefit from these resources we suggest you:
- share the resource pack with practice supervisors in your organisation.
- provide CPD sessions for practice supervisors outlined in the CPD Guide.
- use the challenge questions for senior leaders to kickstart a wider discussion about supporting defensible decision-making.
