Working with autistic parents in children and families social care

Working with autistic parents in children and families social care
Delivered online using Teams
12:00 - 13:30 Thursday, 20 June 2024
'Dismantling stereotypical norms of autism and lack of knowledge of autism within professionals is needed to change to properly assess autistic parent’s needs and their capacity using strength-based approach.' (Hwang, 2023, p. 276).
How can we apply an autism lens when working with autistic parents? It’s important to ensure practice is ethical, well-informed and keeps child and family wellbeing central.
Jenni Guthrie, an autistic social worker and researcher, will facilitate this reflective space for discussing what good practice with autistic parents might look like and the barriers to providing this. Your contributions will shape a future Research in Practice resource.
As a result of attending this knowledge exchange you will be able to:
- Reflect on current challenges as well as positive practice examples of work with autistic parents.
- Demonstrate your commitment to practice development when working with autistic parents, both in your organisation and across the country more broadly.
- Contribute to the development of a Research in Practice resource which seeks to improve practice when working with autistic parents.
- Discuss and reflect on current messages from evidence (based on insights from practice, lived experience and research).
- Reflect on an example of innovative practice with autistic parents and consider any transferable messages for your organisation and practice.
