What is meant by ‘uncertainty’? How does effective recording support practice? What strategies support defensible decision-making? Three new Learning Pathway modules have been launched to develop your critical reflection and analysis skills.

Analysis and critical thinking are essential skills needed for the assessment process. Today we launch the final three modules of the Critical reflection and analysis: Learning Pathway. These modules will guide you through key topics that support your critical thinking and analysis skills with summaries, tools, case studies and reflective questions to build your skills and knowledge.

Available to Research in Practice members, the new modules include:

Working with uncertainty and risk

Unpack what is meant by ‘uncertainty’ and ‘risk’ and practise using tools that will support you to embed these ideas into your critical reflection and analysis.

Analytical skills in practice

Explore and adopt frameworks for effective analysis in assessments, including the anchor principles.

Defensible decision-making

Learn the principles for understanding defensible decision-making in your practice, including what constitutes a defensible decision, strategies that support decision-making and the role of effective recording.

Continuing professional development

You can record your learning and reflections when completing a Learning Pathway. Use this as part of your continuing professional development (CPD) record for registrations, professional standards and renewals.

Shape the future of Learning Pathways

We are inviting Research in Practice partners to explore our new Learning Pathway and complete a survey. Your feedback will play a crucial role in enhancing our learning resources and supporting best practice across social care.

What is a Learning Pathway?

Learning Pathway is a series of modules with sections that you can work through to progress your learning journey. Each module includes summaries, tools, case studies and reflective questions to build your skills and knowledge of a topic.

Critical reflection and analysis: Learning Pathway

As social care practitioners you are making decisions that have a significant impact on other people’s lives. Developing critical reflection and analysis skills will enable you to be clear about what evidence you are drawing on, and what factors influence your advice, support and decision-making.

Critical reflection and analysis are foundational to effective practice in social care. This pathway aims to build on your skills and knowledge to inform your decisions. It introduces you to:

  • Key themes through a summary of relevant resources.
  • Reflective questions to help you embed the learning in your practice.
  • Tools you can take away to put into practice.

Modules include:

  • Module 1: Values and ethics
  • Module 2: Professional curiosity
  • Module 3: Working with uncertainty and risk
  • Module 4: Analytical skills in practice
  • Module 5: Defensible decision-making
