Explore and consider the complexities of working with refugees and people arriving at their local areas from war affected regions.

Participants will consider some of the cultural, social, and psychological factors influencing the experiences of refugees and people from war-affected areas. Using trauma-informed and rights-based approaches, they will reflect on recognising and upholding the inherent rights and dignity of each individual person.

Participants will also reflect on their own practice, including personal biases and assumptions and the potential impact of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue.

Designed for

Social care practitioners working directly with children and families or working directly with adults.

This session is designed for social care workers who have a basic knowledge level or experience of practice in this area.

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe some of the challenges and unique needs faced by refugees and people and families from war-affected areas.
  • Identify some of the cultural, social, and psychological factors influencing the experiences of refugees and people from war-affected areas.
  • Define trauma and its various forms that can be experienced by people from war-affected areas. /Reflect on personal biases and assumptions that may impact interactions with people from different cultural backgrounds. 
  • Develop and apply trauma-informed practices when working with people from war-affected areas.
  • Outline the potential impact of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue on social care practitioners.

This is a full day interactive session delivered via Microsoft Teams and you are encouraged to contribute with the aid of break-out rooms, the chat function and large group discussions. Participants will benefit from having a quiet space to work without interruption. Slides will be sent out after the session.
