Working with complexity in social work with adults before and after the Care Act 2014

Working with complexity in social work with adults before and after the Care Act 2014
Delivered online using Teams
10:30 - 12:00 Wednesday, 21 May 2025
In this webinar, Gavin Butler (Principal Social Worker, Cheshire West and Chester, and Co-chair of the Adults Principal Social Worker Network) will explore working with complexity in social work with adults before and after the implementation of the Care Act in 2014.
At our recent adults Partnership Conference, Gavin took us through the history of adult social care, showing how the sector has adapted to societal changes and uncertainty.
Building on his presentation, this webinar will highlight how the profession has been characterised by uncertainty and complexity. We will explore the impact of the Care Act 2014 and what support is needed for social work professionals going forward.
The session will provide dedicated space and time for attendees to discuss, consider and reflect upon the history of complexity in adult social care.
Learning outcomes
As a result of taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the history of the profession and consider what this means for our own roles and professional identity.
- Understand the impact of the Care Act 2014 on social work, how is it helpful and where there could be improvements to better support social care workers.
- Consider how we use the term ‘complexity’ in the sector and in our roles, and whether there is an alternative narrative that would be helpful in further developing as a profession.
