The impact on carers when the person they care for moves to a care home

The research practice partnerships have produced short evidence briefings in response to questions raised by partner agencies

The impact on carers when the person they care for moves to a care home

Key messages:

  • Carers can experience feelings of powerlessness, loss, regret and sadness alongside relief and will often seek to maintain continuity of the caring relationship.
  • The role of carer can change to advocacy for the quality of life and identity of the person they care for.
  • For carers of people living with dementia, connection during the transition to a care home is important and building relationships with care home staff. The transition can be easier if carers have good communication with staff and feel that the home is welcoming and meets the person’s needs.

Reflective questions:

  • Have you supported a carer during a person’s transition to a care home? What factors do think made it easier for the carer?
  • What were some of the challenges that the carer faced during the transition and what support were you able to offer?
