Extra care housing and dementia

Extra care housing and dementia

Key messages:

  • It is important that everyone living and working in Extra Care Housing (ECH) schemes has dementia awareness training – managers, all support staff and other residents.
  • Integrated working to improve access to healthcare for people living with dementia can support longer term independent living in ECH.
  • Assisting people living with dementia to forge social relationships can support them to live independently for longer in ECH.
  • Taking steps to manage risk, such as using person-centred risk assessments, specialist staff and flexible staffing to respond to care needs can enable longer term independent living.

Reflective questions:

  • Is there an ECH scheme in your area and what local provisions are available to support residents?
  • Do you know anyone living with dementia in ECH – can you identify any further needs they might have and how this could be addressed to support them to live independently for longer?
